‘Finance Plan Disables Physically Challenged’

People with disabilities have been ‘let down’ by the Union Budget, say activists, pointing out that the government has not fulfilled any promises made in the 12th Five Year Plan.

“The Finance Minister has not addressed the commitments made to the country’s 100 million disabled people in terms of health, education, rehabilitation and a barrier-free environment. As much as Rs 523.25 crore has been earmarked for the Department of Disability Affairs, which is an increase of `50 crore from last year’s allocation. Yet, this is hardly enough to implement all the facilities that the disabled are entitled to as per the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities,” said Meenakshi Balasubramanian, member of Disability Rights Alliance, TN.
