Awareness programme on autism : Allahbad

Autism awareness programme on 'Early detection and intervention' was held on Sunday at Professor Pritam Das auditorium of Moti Lal Nehru Medical College. The programme was inaugurated by chief guest Member of Parliament Kunwar Reoti Raman Singh.

Dr Anurag Varma,MD Consultant Psychiatrist,MLN Medical College highlighted problems and newer modalities of treatment. He said autism is a group of neuro-development disorders characterised by deficits in social interaction and communication along with a repetitive pattern of behaviour and interests. They were once thought to be uncommon. But recent figures put it at round 1% of the population. Males are three times more likely to be affected.

He said there were no medical tests to diagnose autism but there are some prescribed criteria used internationally to identify autism comprising certain behaviours that are typically seen in children affected. TNN

Presence or absence of these behaviors in addition to family attitude may help in diagnosing autism. A correct and early diagnosis of autism is crucial because it has been identified that children who receive intensive interaction in a highly structured programme by the age of 18-36 months have greatly improved prognosis.

Lecturer of Psychiatry at MLN Medical College Dr Kshitij Srivastava said children who have autism have speech delay and some are speech disabled. They have problems understanding another person's body language facial expression. They avoid eye contact and have little interest in other children. The awareness programme focused on how to recognise early signs of autism to help prompt diagnosis so that effective interventions may be implemented.

Those who were present on the occasion included Girish Pandey, MLA, S P Singh, principal MLN Medical College, Shraddha Dwivedi, Sarita Bajaj, A K Tandon, Dr V K Singh, associate professor and head of Psychiatry Unit, MLN Medical College, Dr Abhinav Tandon senior resident, MLN Medical College and others.
