The State Government has decided to continue providing uniform free
of cost to physically challenged students studying in special schools
opened for them. It has also been decided that travel cost of physically
challenged persons in urban areas will be subsidized.
The decisions were taken at the second meeting of the Disability Mission here on Saturday presided by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The implementation of different schemes launched by the State Government for physically challenged persons were also reviewed.
The scheme to provide free uniform to physically challenged students was launched by the Government in 2012-13. The expenditure in this regard was provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF). Official sources said the Chief Minister underscored the need for financial rehabilitation of disabled persons.
He directed that steps should be taken to provide more loan to disabled persons at differential rate of interest.
Official sources said Bhima Bhoi capability training camps for differently abled persons are being organised all over the State for providing facilities to them from a single place. So far, 621 such camps have been organised and 2.8 lakh differently abled persons registered.
Similarly, 83,000 physically challenged persons were provided with income certificate and 68,000 issued bus passes at these camps. Besides, 80,000 differently abled beneficiaries have been provided rice at ` 1 per kg.
According to official sources, 508 blind and 370 deaf persons have been appointed as Siksha Sahayaks under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA). Besides, 14,970 physically challenged students have been provided scholarship under the Banishree scheme for higher education. The Government is also paying allowances to 2,18,190 physically challenged persons in the State.
Creation of more training facilities for the physically challenged persons to increase their efficiency level was also discussed. The Chief Minister underscored the need for creation of more employment opportunities for the physically challenged. He launched a website for the disabled persons.
Women and Child Development Minister Usha Devi, Chairperson of the Disability Commission Kasturi Mohapatra, Development Commissioner Jugal Kishore Mohapatra and senior officials attended the meeting.
