Voluntary Medicare Society Srinagar Saturday started a series of sports events for physically challenged children.

According to a press release, the aim of organizing programs like these, VMS said, was to engage these children into extra co-circular activities so that they don't feel to be left behind.

In his welcome address President (VMS) Srinagar, Dr Mir Mohammad Maqbool said “It is the mission of the Voluntary Medicare Society to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive games.”

“The VMS believes that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life among physically challenged,”he added while welcoming guests on Sports Day Function for Physically Challenged persons.

The function was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Shah, who declared the games open.

Speaking on the occasion Shah stressed the need of collective efforts to help physically challenged and special children.

He said that the results of efforts put in by VMS is being reflected through the activities of these physically challenged who have potential to do wonders if provided opportunity in every sphere of life.

In spite of rain, the special children and patients with spinal injuries participated in Cricket, Football and Basketball and exhibited their potential. The Special Children of Hope Bijbehara also participated in the event.

Executive Director Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Abdul Hamid Banday hoped that sports activities will definitely boost the morale of these physically challenged persons.

Secretary and Treasurer of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association Manzoor Ahmad Manzoor distributed medals and trophies among the participants.

Former Executive President Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Tafazul Husain, former IAS officer, .Khurshid Ahmad Malik and Vice President of VMS also spoke on the occasion.
