One-half of Canadian employers have a policy that encourages the hiring of people with disabilities, according to a Pulse Survey of 454 Canadian HR Reporter readers and members of the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA).
And nearly three-quarters (70 per cent) of respondents have hired employees who identified themselves as having a disability.
Eight in 10 (83 per cent) respondents said people with
disabilities are qualified to perform the jobs for which they are
hiring. When comparing the job performance of employees with a
disability to those without, 79 per cent of survey respondents said they
performed the same. Nine per cent said their performance was better.
Help for organizations
Workplace support for employees with disabilities is the number
one form of assistance organizations consider the most beneficial in
hiring or retaining people with disabilities, according to 62 per cent
of survey respondents.
Disability awareness training for staff would also be useful in
hiring or retaining people with disabilities, according to 61 per cent
of respondents.
Six in 10 employers believe financial assistance with workplace modifications would be welcomed.
One-half (53 per cent) of respondents said connections to
community partners that assist in the recruitment of people with
disabilities would be helpful.
