Delhi Uiniversity agrees to turn disabled-friendly

A day before DU had to submit its response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by disability rights NGO Sambhavana in the Delhi high court, the DU authorities issued a statement saying the academic council has decided in favour of making "suitable modifications" and has also constituted a committee.

Delhi University announced that the AC, in a meeting on May 7 and 8, had "resolved that in view of the special needs of the students with disabilities, suitable modifications shall be made in the curricular, mode of instruction and assessment". A 14-member "empowered committee" has also been constituted to examine the various aspects of the curricula and teaching methods. The committee will start with the syllabi that'll be covered in the first semester and submit an "interim report" by June 15.

"The vice chancellor has been authorized to frame the guidelines for mode of instruction, assessment and examinations in consultation with the equal opportunity cell." The committee will "examine the curricular, reading material, mode of instruction and mode of assessment/examination under the four year under-graduate programme".

It will also submit recommendations on the "steps to be taken to improve availability of reading materials for persons with disability". It will also "examine the measures currently in place in the internal assessment scheme/examination pattern and further changes that could be made in this regard for persons with disability".

The NGO Sambhavana had argued that the four-year course in it's current form will prove to be a huge challenge to the visually-impaired students. It pointed out that many visually-impaired students were not allowed to study maths or science beyond a certain point, typically Class eight or 10, and will be unable to handle the foundation courses which are compulsory. They had demanded that a special course be designed to bring such kids up to the level of the others in class.
