Interaction revives hope for victims of disability : VELLORE

A group of around 50 persons, mostly young men, with disabilities caused due to head and spinal injuries sustained in road accidents, gathered at the Town Hall on Wednesday, to share their experiences.

Disabled persons and their family members from across the district got to share their experiences of braving extreme living conditions, while a team of doctors from CMC provided free consultation for the newcomers.

The meet was organised by the Spinal Injury Affected Persons and Differently-abled Welfare Association.

Sathish Kumar, a 27-year-old  from Pennanthur was disabled three years back when a truck hit his two-wheeler. “I had lost hope of living until I met people like me who gave me confidence,” he said. He learnt tailoring and makes a living out of it. He is also an active volunteer in networking people. Similar is the case of Palani (45) of Rangapuram, who met with a accident 20 years back.  He offers free tuition and works as a realtor.

Geetha of Gudiyattam consumed pesticide when she was stopped from continuing higher studies. A wrong treatment had left her totally crippled. She is bound to a wheel chair and is totally dependent on others. Another lady, Prabhavathi, of Paravakkal had slipped into a well and was disabled with spine injuries. Undeterred, she learnt tailoring and was making a living out of it. She also unites disabled people under a SHG, to receive government welfare measures. Newcomer  Vijayan (37) of Kagithapattarai, who had a brain stoke due to excessive consumption of alcohol said,“I am happy to be here as I get confidence to face the world bravely.” The common problems faced by this group is that they lack control over functions like urination and bowel movements. The programme was supported by local NGO Udavum Ullangal and the department of rehabilitation attached to CMC.
