The YashwantraoChavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) will print books in Braille for its blind students enrolled in the one-year course on self-help groups (SHG).
The books are scheduled to be printed by the end of this month. The
course for starting SHGs that began three years ago had a significant
number of blind students, which prompted the university to print books
for the course in Braille to aid them.
"We are printing four books for the course in Braille as we have
many blind students enrolled in the course who were finding it difficult
to cope with regular books. We have two centres for the course at
present. One is at Chiplun (Ratnagiri) and the other in Nashik where
classes are being conducted at the National Association for the Blind
(NAB)," said registrar of YCMOU Prakash Atkare. He said the books had
already been sent for printing and will be available from next month.
The one year course with 32 credits had 47 blind students in the first
year, 20 last year and 47 this year. The students were finding it
difficult to cope with the syllabus as there were no books for them in
Braille. They had to rely on the classes conducted for them and the
notes that they took down during the classes. Therefore, the university
decided to print the books in Braille.
The books which are being printed in Braille include 'Empowering women,
eradication of poverty and self-help groups', 'Preparing for SHG and
establishing SHG', 'Development and expansion of SHG', and 'Expertise
for SHG'.
"The books are in Marathi and will provide help for the blind students," said Paikarao Vij, who is in-charge of the course.
