As
many as 40 auto operators, came together at Simplex Colony in Ghansoli
on Monday morning, and pledged not to charge fare for physically
challenged people. The auto drivers were inspired to take the pledge
after Ghansoli resident and auto driver Santosh Gaikwad was awarded by
the Andheri regional transport office (RTO) for helping the
differently-abled people for more than a decade now.
"We are inspired by Gaikwad who has been offering free rides to the physically challenged," said Premnath Mhatre. These auto drivers have pasted posters about road safety, apprehending drunk driving and helping the less-privileged on their autos. "It's a great initiative. We need more such people to come forward," said Santosh Chavan, a commuter who got a free ride from Ghansoli to Vashi.
"Apart from helping the physically challenged people, we also understood the importance of road safety and good manners," said Suryakant Mhatre, an auto operator.
Another auto operator Balasaheb Shinde added that this was their opportunity of philanthropic activity.
According to Gaikwad, apart from these 40 auto drivers, 10 more are interested in pledging their support to helping the physically challenged.
"We will offer free pick up and drop service from various locations in the city when we are on duty. This facility is available from 9am to 9pm," he said.
