In a welcome disabled-friendly move, the Mantralaya will allow disabled
persons to enter the premises at 1 pm, instead of the stipulated 2 pm
when visitors are let in.
In an order issued by the home department on November 22, 2013, a copy of which is with The Asian Age, officer Vijay Lite said that when disabled persons enter Mantralaya at 2 pm, along with other visitors, they face hardships and find it difficult to get their work done. Hence, the order would facilitate them as they can now enter the premises an hour earlier, he said. An order copy has also been sent to the deputy commissioner of police and Mantralaya security.
Disabled activist Samir Zaveri has hailed the decision, but has requested the government to publicise the move to help more beneficiaries. “I requested the government to relax visiting hours for the handicapped, and it was okayed. But, I have learnt that the security staff at entry gates is not aware about the said directives and are hence not allowing disabled persons entry from 1 pm,” said Mr Zaveri. He added, “I have written to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan praying him to display informative boards at each entry gate mentioning the said direction to ensure its compliance.”
On an average, over 5,000 visitors across the state throng Mantralaya to meet officials, request or appeal or to follow-up their requirements. These visitors include a handful of disabled visitors, too. These visitors had demanded a relaxation in visiting hours in view of hardships faced by them, especially going through the security channels.
