The Mahatma Gandhi University has come up with a new scheme to
support the critically ailing and the disabled students with treatment
aids and annual scholarships, according to reports on Wednesday.
Claimed as the first in the history of any university in the country, the scheme is expected to benefit as many as 3.5 lakh students, whose annual family incomes are capped below `2.5 lakh.
Based on the scheme, a
maximum of `25,000 will be given as medical assistance for those
undergoing treatments for tumour, cancer, kidney failure, and heart
problems and the like. The allowance, however, will not be entertained
over the successive years. Beneficiaries of other schemes are eligible
to apply for the medical aid.Cultural scholarships, specially sanctioned
by the vice chancellor, will be allotted to university youth festival
winners, who would be continuing their studies, subject to the income
ceiling.
The schemes were proposed by the managing committee comprising pro-vice chancellor Dr Sheena Shukkoor, syndicate members Prof K V Narayana Kurup, Prof C H Abdul Latif, P K Firoz, registrar M R Unni and director of students services, Dr Hari Changampuzha. Under the scheme for the disabled, `5,000 will be given to 20 students who are physically challenged, meritorious students, and are also pursuing for degree and post-graduate courses. Preference will be given to fresh applicants.
The amount for the annual cultural scholarship for the university youth festival winners have been fixed at `5,000.
