chapter of the National Association for the Blind (NAB) felicitated six
blind achievers from the state at an event organized at Ahmedabad
Management Association (AMA) on Saturday. Two blind social workers, who
celebrated their 75th birthdays and the first national president of NAB
from Gujarat were also felicitated on the occasion.
Gujarat governor OP Kohli was the chief guest whereas former chief commissioner for persons with disabilities PK Pincha was special guest at the event.
Bhikabhai Shah Awards were conferred to Muktaben Dagli, a social worker known for promoting services for blind women and organizes their marriages and Chandrakant Solanki, for contributing to development and promotion of Braille in the state.
Jagdish Patel Awards were awarded to Hasmukh Dhorda for promoting education of blind children and Durlabh Patel, a blind faculty member of Polytechnic teaching English to the sighted students.
Mukundbhai Gandhi Awards, given to women achievers, were conferred to Janaki Akhani who got selected as a bank probationary officer and Yasmin Bharmal, a teacher working with sighted children.
The association marked 75 years of two major blind social workers for the blind GJ Vachhani and Anil Patel. Patel has died recently. "Vacchani is considered an important figure in history of the blind welfare in the state as during his stint as general secretary of NAB, he promoted networking of all organizations working for blind welfare. Patel worked tirelessly all his life for education and rehabilitation of the blind especially in Saurashtra," said a NAB official. Vachhani and Patel's family were felicitated by the governor.
Professor Bhaskar Mehta, who has been elected as president of NAB recently, was feliciated for his achievement as he has become the first person from Gujarat to get the position.
