Formally declaring Kannur as the first disabled-friendly district in the country under the 'Barrier-Free Kannur' project, on Monday, the minister for health and social justice K K Shailaja said this would be beneficial not only to the differently-abled people but also the ordinary people, including the elderly.
She also said that the government would consider implementing a project to transform Kerala into a disabled-friendly State.
"This project is a clear example that where there is a will, there is a way," said the minister. "This would be beneficial to thousands of people in various sectors that are not much cared by many."
Under barrier-free Kannur, a project announced in 2015 by the then finance minister K M Mani, all the government institutions including offices, local bodies, schools and hospitals have been made disabled-friendly by constructing ramps for using wheelchair .
Also, there are steel railings on the ramps, grooved tile surface for visually challenged and display boards in Braille script.
This apart, lifts have also also constructed in ten selected government offices in the district including Collectorate, which was also inaugurated by the health minister.
As of now, nearly 1842 offices and institutions have been converted 'barrier-free' that has made these places easily accessible for the physically challenged persons and also the old people.
It was in October 2015 that the project began, and Rs 18.5 crore have been spent for converting the offices in the district as barrier free.
